When I began Locally Obsessed, I knew I wanted to give back to my local community in addition to featuring local artists and vendors. I was always searching for the perfect local non profit to get involved with, and it took me until recently to find it.

Feather and Rose Support Bags was created just a few short months ago by stay at home mom Chelsea.

In 2015, Chelsea’s mother in law Dana was diagnosed with colon cancer and underwent chemotherapy for almost two years.

On her first treatment day, her kids gave her a support bag to take with her. This included items that would help her during treatment and make her feel loved and supported. It included a journal, mint tea, letters from family, a cozy blanket, socks, water bottle, lotions, hand sanitizer and more.

When Dana was receiving treatment, she connected to a lot of different people. She sat next to a young 22 year old woman who was also battling cancer. The young woman had no family, no close friends, and no one to come to her appointments with her. Dana was very upset that this young warrior didn't have the type of support she had. That moment is what sparked a movement, and is where this journey began. Dana spent her two years in treatment creating and donating care bags to patients who needed the extra support that she was so lucky to have. She sent bags to patients all over Canada anonymously and her family was very proud of her. Sadly, Dana lost her battle Christmas Eve 2016.

Since then, Chelsea had been thinking about continuing her mother in law’s legacy and took the first step in March of 2018, creating Feather and Rose Support Bags.

She has seen an outpouring of love and generosity from local businesses all over British Columbia. Much like Locally Obsessed, Chelsea tries to include as many locally made items as possible in her bags. After seeing many of the businesses I follow on social media join her, I learned about her vision and absolutely fell in love with the concept. I have decided to donate $1 from every subscription Feather and Rose. I love that the project is so personal, with each bag put together with so much thought and care.

Each item in these bag are exactly what a patient needs during difficult times in treatment, such as water bottles, natural skincare products, a journal, a book, healing stone bracelets, warm, comfortable, and stylish hats and socks, and other small uplifting treasures from the community.

Feather and Rose bags are donated to patients by word of mouth. If you know someone who could benefit from receiving a support bag please send an email to featherandrose@outlook.com. Please follow Feather and Rose on Facebook as well to stay in the loop for upcoming fundraisers and events!
